District Initiatives

Sequoia Healthcare District has developed and provides ongoing support for several long-term healthcare initiatives, which include:

Samaritan House Free Medical Clinic of Redwood City

In 2001, the District partnered with Samaritan House to bring a free medical clinic to an underserved neighborhood in Redwood City. A small staff and numerous volunteers provide primary and specialty medical care, including vision and dental, to more than 3500 low-income patients a year. Learn more…

Children’s Health Insurance

The Sequoia Healthcare District has partnered with San Mateo County in the Children’s Health Initiative (www.smcchi.org). The Children’s Health Initiative ensures that all children ages 0 through 18 in San Mateo County have access to comprehensive health insurance coverage. As many as 17,000, or 10 percent, of San Mateo children are growing up without access to health care services because their families can't afford insurance. Many uninsured families delay medical care until a condition has worsened and the treatment is more expensive, or they use costly emergency room services for primary care.

Nurses for Redwood City Schools

Today school nurses do much more than comfort children with scraped knees and bee stings. They have become community health educators for contagious illnesses and nutritional counselors to meet such challenges as childhood diabetes. They serve as compasses for children’s health, pointing families in the right direction to receive appropriate medical care for their children. The Sequoia Healthcare District provides funds to maintain the school nurse program in the Redwood City School District.
