PE+ is a strategic Healthy Schools Initiative partnership project between Redwood City Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) and Peninsula Community Center (PCC). These two organizations provide physical education classes 2 days per week for grades K-5, plus recess/lunch activities and support, at 10 school sites in Redwood City School District, reaching over 5000 students per year.

Trained PE+ coaches who are passionate about sports/fitness, youth development, and community engagement deliver a comprehensive, sequential, standards-based PE curriculum that:

  • provides instruction and exposure to a wide variety of sports and games such as volleyball, dance, soccer, Frisbee, and culture games
  • improves children’s physical fitness and motor skills
  • promotes healthy lifestyle choices and eating habits through “Health & Nutrition Huddles”
  • develops the social-emotional well-being of each child by building confidence, teamwork, and enjoyment of physical activity

“The coaches are an inspiration to the children…I know my students would not receive such a comprehensive PE program if it were not for the quality of instruction, dedication of practice and teamwork, and attendance to each student the coaches provide every PE class.” — 5th grade teacher (PCC Newsletter, September 2013)

“It is exciting to see some children, who are not too successful academically, being successful in PE through the way the coaches weave different skills into each lesson.” – Kindergarten teacher
