Embracing Our Community Project

<< back

A program by Advocates for Children to prepare African American and Hispanic volunteers and advocates to work with minority children in foster care in ways that are sensitive to the ethnic and cultural backgrounds of the children. The effort includes community meetings and outreach, training and volunteer retention.

What it is: Embracing Our Community reaches out to community leaders and groups through secular and non-secular channels to develop a corps of volunteers who will work with children in foster care. A disproportionate share of children in foster care or living with relatives are African American or Latino — nearly 70 percent of those entering child welfare services in the county are from these populations, though they represent less than a third of county children.

It may have taken a lifetime to develop a bad habit, but it’s never too late in life to get rid of one. Remember that change is possible at every stage of life, and be patient. Change also takes time.
