San Carlos, Belmont, Menlo Park, Woodside, Atherton and Portola Valley.
Programs & Initiatives
HeartSafe
HeartSafe is a public access defibrillation (PAD) program aimed at increasing the survival rate from sudden cardiac arrest by the strategic placement of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) throughout the community. An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a small, portable device that analyzes heart rhythms and, if determined to be necessary, can deliver a potentially lifesaving shock to a victim in cardiac arrest.
Community Grants
A community’s health care needs are served by a broad array of health-related programs and initiatives that promote physical, emotional and psychological well being. Sequoia Healthcare District seeks through the District’s grant making program to leverage District assets and make significant contributions to the health of the community.
Nursing Education
To prepare a ready supply of registered nurses for our community, Sequoia Healthcare District has created a unique partnership among Cañada College, San Francisco State University (SFSU), and Sequoia Hospital. Sequoia Healthcare District is underwriting the Sequoia Hospital/SFSU BSN Satellite Program at Cañada College in the amount of $1M per year and has provided $650,000 for a state-of-the-art nursing skills lab on the Cañada College campus.
Initiatives
Sequoia Healthcare District has developed and provides continuing support for several long-term healthcare initiatives. These include two medical clinics, one in partnership with the County of San Mateo at the Fair Oaks Clinic and the other with the Samaritan Health Clinic in Redwood City, serving the uninsured and underserved populations in our community. The District supports these two clinics with over $2 million in grants each year.
The District also supports the Children's Health Initiative, a collaborative effort to reduce the uninsured children (up to 18 years of age) in San Mateo County. This effort has reduced the number of uninsured children in the County from 18,000 to less than 3,000 in five years ending in 2007.
The District has provided support to health nurses in local schools.
Collaborative Strength
We believe the best results are achieved when we work with other agencies who are the best at what they do. To continuously assess needs and fill gaps in services, Sequoia Healthcare District has developed alliances with several organizations that are striving to improve community health. These alliances include the San Mateo County Health Disparities Collaborative, the Children's Health Initiative Oversight Committee, local chambers of commerce, Redwood City 2020 and the Blue Ribbon Task Force on Adult Health Care Coverage Expansion. In addition, the District has reached an agreement with Catholic Healthcare West to rebuild and expand Sequoia Hospital to meet new seismic code requirements. The District plays a public oversight role in ensuring that Sequoia Hospital continues to provide comprehensive health care services to the community.
The District has begun a strategic planning effort involving members of the community in deciding the key strategic initiatives that the District will undertake over the next five to ten years to fulfill its mission of serving the communities healthcare needs.
