Ms. Kurtzman joined Sequoia Healthcare District in August, 2006 to launch the HeartSafe Program, a
public access defibrillator program that aims to increase the survival rate from sudden cardiac arrest
through the strategic placement of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and training community
members in CPR.
In January, 2010 with HeartSafe fully integrated into the community, Ms. Kurtzman was appointed to
oversee District-supported programs that serve the community’s youth. She designed and implemented
the district’s new Healthy Schools Initiative, a collaboration with four local school districts, to develop
strategies and provide resources to increase opportunities for the schools to implement high quality,
coordinated wellness programs.
Prior to joining SHCD, Pamela worked at the Stanford Center for Disease Prevention serving in two
capacities; first in heart disease research and, subsequently, as an Exercise Physiologist for the
Living Strong, Living Well Program, an exercise program for cancer survivors.
Ms. Kurtzman earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Exercise Science and pre-med from Arizona State
University in 1995, and a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the State University of New York at
Stonybrook and Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health in 2000.
An important aspect of her life is family. She resides in San Carlos with her husband, a molecular
biologist and biochemist working in therapeutic drug discovery, her 6 year old son and 8 year old
daughter (and a few four legged creatures— some green and some furry).
